For the first time in history, a woman—under the stool name Nana Kofi Asopea IV—has been installed as the substantive Chief of Agona Duotu in the Agona East District of the Central Region.
The installation, which took place last Tuesday, drew high-profile personalities including the DCE for Agona East, Hon. Samuel Oscar Mensah, the Chief of Agona Duakwa and Kontihene of the Agona Nyakrom Traditional Area, Nana Kojo Amuakwa V, as well as chiefs and residents from neighbouring communities.
Nana Kojo Amuakwa V, custodian of the land, cautioned that he would not tolerate any form of disrespect from chiefs within his jurisdiction. He emphasized that traditional leadership exists to serve the people and safeguard their well-being—not to lord over them.
He therefore charged Nana Kofi Asopea IV to lead with humility.
“Being the first woman to rule as a substantive Chief in Agona Duotu—and indeed in the entire Agona Nyakrom Traditional Area—I expect you to live a life worthy of emulation. Unite your people, champion development, and be mindful of your actions and inactions,” he stated.
In response, Nana Kofi Asopea IV assured Nana Kojo Amuakwa V and Nananom that she would not disappoint them, pledging to discharge her duties with mutual respect for all.
She expressed gratitude to the Agona Duakwahene for the honour bestowed on her and called for unity and peaceful coexistence to foster development in Agona Duotu and its surrounding communities.
“My priority is the well-being of my people. I urge the youth to build a better future for themselves and avoid negative lifestyles such as hard drugs and early pregnancies. They must focus on their education,” she said.
Nana Kofi Asopea IV also encouraged parents to closely monitor their children—especially girls—to ensure they remain committed to their studies, stressing that education remains the greatest legacy any parent can give.
