The District Chief Executive for Pusiga, Abdul Rahim Aguri Haruna, has announced plans to transform the historic site in Kulungungu, where Ghana's first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, was attacked, into a premier tourist destination.
The initiative is aimed at boosting the local economy, which has been adversely affected by a prolonged chieftaincy dispute in Bawku.
The conflict has led neighboring countries, Burkina Faso and Togo, to reroute their traffic through Paga instead of Pusiga.
The proposed development includes constructing a modern statue of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah at the site and establishing a tourist centre to attract visitors. Plans are also underway to develop the district’s three-country boundary pillar to further enhance its appeal.
Mr. Aguri Haruna announced after leading the Pusiga District Assembly and stakeholders in a sod-cutting ceremony for new development projects across six communities: Terago, Nakambo, Ninkogo, Nakom, Tindanatinga, and Kolpelugu.
He cautioned contractors against substandard work, urging them to deliver quality projects that will benefit the communities.
The DCE also highlighted achievements since assuming office, including the construction and commissioning of a three-unit classroom block at Pusiga Community Day Senior High School, the provision of boreholes, and the renovation of health centres.
Contractors assured the DCE of the timely completion of the projects and pledged to maintain high standards in delivering the works across the various communities.
