Ghana National Council of Sweden Engages With New Ghana’s Ambassador to Denmark and Sweden

The Ghanaian community in Sweden has taken another important step towards strengthening sustained collaboration with Ghana’s diplomatic mission in Denmark following a high-level engagement between the Ghana National Council of Sweden (GNCS) and Her Excellency Dr. Margaret Miewien Chebere, Ambassador of the Republic of Ghana to Denmark and Sweden.

On Tuesday, 16 December, a five-member delegation from GNCS paid a courtesy visit to the Ambassador at the Ghana Embassy in Denmark, following the Ambassador’s presentation of her Letters of Credence to the King of Denmark. The delegation was led by the Chairperson of the Council, Nana Afia Achia Deiwaa, and included leaders from various local Ghanaian associations in Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malmö. Also present was a former Member of the Swedish Parliament, Hon. Joe Frans.

Nana Afia Achiaa Deiwaa formally welcomed the Ambassador on her assumption of duty and expressed appreciation for her readiness to engage with the Ghanaian community in Sweden soon after presenting her credentials.

A major highlight of the meeting was a discussion on GHANAFEST 2026, scheduled for Saturday, 6 June 2026. Nana Deiwaa explained that the maiden edition of GHANAFEST, held in August 2025, focused primarily on cultural and traditional showcases through food, dance, and fashion. She noted that plans for GHANAFEST 2026 include expanding the event to incorporate Business, Trade, and Exhibitions, with a dedicated exhibition component scheduled for 4 June 2026. This segment will focus mainly on agriculture, waste and renewable energy.

She emphasized the importance of close collaboration with the Ghana Embassy—similar to the support received during the maiden edition—to ensure the success of GHANAFEST 2026 in Stockholm. The goal, she explained, is to bring together Swedish and Ghanaian investors for mutual economic benefit to both Ghana and Sweden.

Another key area of discussion was the Mobile Consular Service (MCS), an initiative through which the Ghana Embassy, in collaboration with the Ghana National Council of Sweden, provides consular services such as passport and visa applications in major cities across Sweden. The chairperson, Nana Afia Achiaa Deiwaa acknowledged the significant impact of the MCS and its importance to Ghanaians living in Sweden. While commending the Embassy for the strong collaboration, she proposed that due to the high demand for the service, the exercise should be organized twice a year instead of the current once-a-year arrangement.

The Ghana National Council of Sweden serves as an umbrella organization for registered Ghanaian associations across Sweden, with seven associations currently registered as members. Nana Deiwaa assured the Ambassador that the Council remains open to welcoming other registered associations that are not yet members and outlined efforts already taken to engage leadership of some of these associations.

In her closing remarks, Nana Afia Achiaa Deiwaa once again expressed GNCS’s deep appreciation for the Ambassador’s engagement and reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to continuous collaboration with the Mission. In response, Her Excellency Dr. Margaret Miewien Chebere expressed her delight in receiving the delegation and stated her eagerness to work closely with GNCS, particularly in relation to the Business and Trade Exhibition planned for GHANAFEST 2026.
