In Türkiye, the nation which financed Ghana’s National Mosque, a predominantly Muslim-majority country, Hijab/headscarf is not mandatory even for Muslims. In fact, it was banned for a very long period in state institutions and Türkiye remained Muslim.
PREAMBLE
Practitioners of Voodism as a religion whose children attend as Islamic institution for high school, file a lawsuit in court to allow the kids to wear ‘Red Feathers’ in their hair as part of their uniform whiles walking about in school.
An attempt to segregate the students based on Religion. Even worse another overzealous Christian family requests for their children to wear the Star of David in their uniforms in the Islamic High School.
SECTION 2
In addition, the families’ request that the high school students be granted the freedom to pray and observe their faith as Vodouists and Christians, A rather innocent and noble ask. Afterall, what’s not to like about faith and prayers.
DETRACTORS
Except, their detractors wonder why Feathers and Stars of David outside of prayer times should be essential parts of the student uniforms, if not an agenda for Segregation and Religious Exclusivity. What comes Next?
HIJABS in CHRISTIAN HIGH SCHOOLS
Many Muslim-majority countries like Tunisia, Kosovo, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Indonesia, Malaysia to name a few have either banned Hijabs completely in high schools or Do Not Mandate it in schools. The students are not any less Muslim nor are they Atheists because they don’t walk about with headscarves outside of prayers.
CONCLUSION
The period between grade school and high school is mostly the time where genuine friendships devoid of ulterior motives, and political and financial interests are formed. When students hailing from the length and breadth of Ghana and beyond, come together in classrooms and playgrounds to learn more about each other.
When children build relationships and bond together under a set of school rules prescribed by the institution regardless of where the person comes from.
Inclusivity Cannot Be the Exclusive Right of Any Particular Group, be they Muslim, Christian, Traditionalist or Atheist.
Prayers and the Practice of Faith cannot be a disguise for any agenda of Religious Segregation in Ghana’s High Schools. GYE NYAME!
