The Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG) has expressed strong support for the Government of Ghana’s recent proposal to establish a National Media Fund, describing it as a timely initiative that could strengthen the country’s media landscape.
In a statement signed by its President, David Tamakloe, and Public Affairs & External Relations Officer, Emmanuel Opare Djan, PRINPAG highlighted that Ghana’s media industry is currently facing mounting challenges, including rising operational costs, dwindling advertising revenue, limited access to training, and increasing sustainability pressures, especially for smaller and privately-owned outlets.
The association warned that these constraints threaten the independence, vibrancy, and long-term viability of the press, making the creation of the Fund a critical intervention.
PRINPAG specifically commended President John Dramani Mahama for reviving the idea, noting that he had first proposed a national media support mechanism during his first term in office, though it could not be fully implemented before the conclusion of that administration in 2016. The association expressed optimism that, under the current leadership, the vision for media development will finally be realized.
“We are hopeful that this renewed effort to operationalize the Media Development Fund will come to fruition,” PRINPAG stated, while urging the government to expedite the processes to ensure timely support for journalists and media houses nationwide.
The association also called for the Fund to be structured around strong governance mechanisms, including a dedicated Secretariat, a Fund Administrator, and an Independent Board of competent professionals, to guarantee transparency, independence, and effective management.
PRINPAG encouraged collaboration among media stakeholders, development partners, civil society organizations, the private sector, and the public to back the initiative, emphasizing that a resilient and independent media is crucial for deepening democracy, promoting accountability, and driving national development.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with the government and stakeholders to build a free, vibrant, and sustainable media environment in Ghana.
