The University of Ghana has demanded an immediate retraction and apology from Private Legal Practitioner Moses Foh-Amoaning over claims that its recent review of statutes was made to admit and recognise LGBTQ activities.
The allegations, which have been republished by some media outlets, were made by Foh-Amoaning while speaking on Accra-based Onua TV’s ‘Yen Nsempa’ programme.
In a statement issued on Monday, November 24, the university said the claims were “entirely false, misleading and defamatory.”
The management warned that failure to comply would leave them with no option but to pursue legal action under Ghanaian law. It explained that the changes to its statutes only involved replacing gender-specific pronouns with gender-neutral terms.
“The University therefore demands an immediate retraction of the false statements made by Mr. Foh-Amoaning and a public apology to the Vice-Chancellor and the University community. Failure to comply within a reasonable timeframe will leave the University with no option but to pursue appropriate legal remedies under Ghanaian law to protect the integrity of the institution and its leadership,” the statement read in part.
“The University wishes to state emphatically and without ambiguity that the allegations made by Mr. Foh-Amoaning are entirely false, misleading and defamatory,” it added.
The university also criticised attempts to personalise the matter by targeting the Vice-Chancellor, noting that no individual has the authority to amend the statutes on their own.
