The internal politics of the New Patriotic Party in the Ashanti Region has taken a decisive turn as the Ashanti NPP Identifiable Group publicly throws its support behind Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s preferred flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.

Chairman of the group, Mr Mark Obeng, said he and his members believe the former Vice President remains the most strategic choice to lead the NPP into the next national contest against the NDC.

In an interview with the correspondent, Mr Obeng argued that despite the party’s loss in the 2024 elections, Dr Bawumia still embodies the qualities needed to reposition the NPP for victory. He described him as humble, respectful, unifying and highly focused on policy, insisting that these attributes make him the best person to restore momentum within the party.

Mr Obeng, who also heads the Kumasi Kajetia PZ NPP Retailers Association, acknowledged that all aspirants in the upcoming flagbearership race are capable and politically experienced. However, he stressed that the party has reached a critical moment where its survival and competitiveness demand a widely known, marketable and nationally accepted candidate.

He maintained that Dr Bawumia fits that description more than any other contender, noting that his popularity extends across the country and beyond.

As polling station agents chairman for the Asuofua NPP in the Atwima Nwabiagya North Constituency, Mr Obeng emphasized that the party’s primary focus should be securing victory in 2028. He urged members to put aside internal differences and unite behind a common agenda.

Declaring his unwavering support for Dr Bawumia, he appealed to delegates to vote overwhelmingly for him when the time comes. According to him, a united NPP under Bawumia’s leadership will be well positioned to unseat President John Dramani Mahama and “open a new, progressive chapter” that addresses the pressing economic challenges facing Ghanaians.
