'I’ve been vindicated, election violence accusations against me baseless, I need an apology' — Hawa Koomson

Former Awutu Senya East Member of Parliament, Mavis Hawa Koomson, says she feels vindicated following official findings that “cleared” her of involvement in election-related violence during the 2020 and 2024 polls.

The former Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister has often been accused by political opponents of using party thugs to instigate attacks and injure opponents.

In the lead-up to the 2024 elections, her then opponent on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), now MP Philis Naa Koryoo Okennor, claimed her convoy was attacked by men loyal to Hawa Koomson.

However, briefing the public on investigations into election violence on Tuesday, November 4, Interior Minister Mohammed Muntaka-Mubarak noted that, “Honourable Philis Naa Koryoo Okennor denied that her convoy was attacked. She was nowhere near the scene of the incident.”

Reacting in a social media post on Wednesday, Hawa Koomson said the outcome of the investigations confirms her innocence and called on her accusers to apologise for the unjustified attacks on her.

“The findings reported by the investigative team have substantiated my initial assertion that I bear no responsibility for the violence, which tragically resulted in the loss of an innocent life,” she stated.

She added, “While she may have derived some advantage from these baseless allegations, I sincerely hope that those who have wrongfully accused me will possess the integrity to issue a full and unequivocal apology for the trauma I have endured.”
