Five killed, 12 injured in deadly collision on Cape Coast-Accra highway

Tragedy struck on Monday afternoon when a rice-laden truck collided with a mini bus at Waakrom junction near Yamoransa on the Cape Coast–Accra highway, leaving five people dead and 12 others injured.

The DAF truck, with registration number AW 9548-13 and loaded with 700 bags of rice, reportedly developed a fault before crashing head-on into a Toyota Hiace mini bus with registration number GC 9728-21. The impact left the bus mangled, trapping several passengers inside.

According to the Central Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), ADOIII Abdul Wasui Hudu, his outfit received a distress call at about 2:45 p.m. and rushed to the scene.

“Our personnel found the mini bus severely mangled with some victims trapped. We managed to extricate five persons, but sadly, four of them were pronounced dead at the hospital while one remains in critical condition,” ADOIII Hudu explained.

He added that eyewitnesses and local residents had earlier rescued 12 passengers and rushed them to the Biriwa Health Centre for treatment, but one of them was later confirmed dead.

Meanwhile, the driver and another occupant of the DAF truck escaped without injuries.

The accident caused heavy traffic on the busy highway as emergency services battled to save lives and clear the wreckage.

ADOIII Hudu has urged motorists using the Cape Coast–Accra highway to exercise extreme caution to prevent further tragedies.
