'Let's stop this nonsense in Ghana' — Chiefs urge Mahama

Omanhene of Gomoa Ajumako Traditional Area, Obrempong Nyanful Krampah XI last Saturday received a rousing welcome to the annual Nyeyi Festival celebration of the chiefs and people of the Komenda Traditional Area, led by its Omanhene, Okatakyi Comey VIII.

Obrempong Nyanful Krampah XI who chaired the grand durbar to climax the festival, encouraged His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama to clamp down on the increasing hate speech and politics of insult on social media, describing it as an affront to Ghanaian cultural values and principles of coexistence with mutual respect for each other.

According to Obrempong Nyanful Krampah XI, such impunity should not be entertained in Ghanaian society, adding that those found to be engaging in politics of insult should be dealt with drastically to serve as a deterrent to others.

"We shouldn't allow people to use politics as a yardstick to insult high-level personalities, including the President of the Republic of Ghana.

"Nananom who are custodians of the land are doing their best through moral upbringing to stop this 'nonsense' going on in the country. Social media is meant to teach people to spearhead human and infrastructure development but not otherwise.

"It is shameful for the international community to tag Ghana as a State that uses social media as a tool to insult high level personalities instead of using ICT to train its future leaders.

"With this kind of negativity going on in the country, what legacy do we intend to leave for generations to come?

"Social media has become part and parcel of our daily lives, kids as young as 8 years have access to social media, so what goes on there affects them positively or negatively. We should be mindful of what we put out there on our media landscape.

"Nananom have high hope in His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama-led NDC government's reset agenda and will support every move to reset the mindset of Ghanaians for a better future," Obrempong noted.

Touching on the theme for the celebration, "Empowering Tradition for Sustainable Future," Obrempong Nyanful Krampah XI praised Okatakyi Comey VIII for the theme, indicating that it is appropriate for the youth to ponder on.

"We Nananom who are custodians of the land are doing our best to ensure proper upbringing of our offshoot but we need government's full support to reduce the level of indiscipline of the youth in particular.

"Then again, I will like to employ the Ministry of Education to include Ghanaian cultural values and principles as a subject of study in our educational institutions so as to enable the children know how to coexist peacefully in our various communities," he stressed.

Obrempong Nyanful Krampah XI commended Omanhene of Komenda Traditional Area Okatakyi Comey VIII for the establishment of the Educational Fund to support brilliant but needy students in his jurisdiction and donated GHS7,000 as seed money to support the Fund.

Omanhene of Komenda Traditional Area, Okatakyi Comey VIII appeals for early completion of the road that links the Community to the main Cape Coast-Takoradi Highway to boost the local economy.

He appealed for the revamping of the Komenda Sugar factory to create job opportunities for the teeming unemployed youth in the community.

Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Her Excellency Professor Naana Opoku Agyeman, who is a native of the community, was installed as Gyaasehene of Komenda Traditional Area under the stool name Owoabrempong Kru-Kow I in appreciation for her commitment towards the development of Komenda Traditional Area.
