The "Second Term Curse" is a political concept where leaders tend to underperform in their second term juxtaposed with their first term in office.
The concept may have originated from the early 1970's where president Richard Nixon after getting re-elected for a second term struggled to maintain his momentum. His second term became synonymous to controversies and scandals. Most significant was the Watergate scandal.
Other USA presidents, notably Ronald Reagan,Bill Clinton,George W. Bush and Barack Obama who had second terms were not spared their fair share of the scandals, economic crisis and wars. These curves have led to a dip in popularity in office.
In Ghana, the fourth Republic has seen a consistent change in the ruling party after every 2 terms.Even though, our political landscape has evolved into a two party system,I will strongly attribute this status quo to the phenomenom of governments getting unpopular in their second term.
This is why the NPP,were voted into power in 2000,got replaced by the NDC government from 2008 to 2016.Then again power has transitioned to the NDC from 2024.
Amazingly, the John Dramani Mahama government even in its second term in office is defying the phenomenom of the second term curse. He has clearly outperformed his predecessor and has by far surpassed his first term in office in terms of performance.A significant part of the policies in the NDC'S 2024 Manifesto dubbed "Resetting Ghana: Jobs,Accountability and Prosperity" has been implemented.
President John Dramani Mahama has clearly defied the odds and broken the Second Term Curse because his second term is an improvement over the first. He has clearly indicated he doesnt intend to undermine the constitution in anyway, putting an end to speculations about third termism.
President John Dramani Mahama is destined to leave office as one of the best Ghana has ever had and one of the greatest in the world. It is clear to see that the legacy effect of his term, gives performance legitimacy for the NDC and a continuity vote from the good people of Ghana is almost written in stone. This is a sharp contrast to Akufo-Addo's performance in office which led to major economic downturns, widespread corruption and resultantly a major decline in the popularity of the NPP.
Whoever gets the nod to run for president on the ticket of the NDC will be indebted to president Mahama because he has broken the Second Term Curse by choosing to be a good leader, inspiring hope for a more prosperous Ghana.Candidly, victory for the NDC in 2028 is as clear as day.
The words of Plato, "the measure of a man is what he does with power" are more relevant this day when I see the great things president John Dramani Mahama is achieving. Wow! What a time to be a Ghanaian.
Long Live Mother Ghana.
