The 2024 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has dismissed claims that he delivered the party’s poorest electoral performance in Zongo polling stations.
Many, including MP for Abetifi and NPP flagbearer hopeful, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has stated that Dr. Bawumia failed to deliver votes even from his own Muslim fraternity, claiming he won just a single zongo polling station.
The former Vice President described such assertions as propaganda without any verifiable data to back them.
Speaking at a campaign engagement in Adansi Asokwa on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, Dr. Bawumia insisted that his performance in Zongo communities during the 2024 elections was better than what the party recorded with Nana Akufo-Addo in 2020.
“The propaganda out there is that Muslims and the Zongo people did not cast their votes for Dr. Bawumia. When I heard it, I asked, ‘Where is the data to support these claims?’ Because for me, if you tell me something, I need data to prove whether it’s true,” he said.
“If you look at the data, the NPP performed better in Zongo polling stations than it did in the 2020 elections. Recently, one presidential aspirant claimed that in the Zongos, Dr. Bawumia won only one polling station in the entire country,” he added.
The NPP is scheduled to elect its flagbearer for the 2028 general elections on January 31, 2026.
Five aspirants, including Dr. Bawumia, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, former Agric Minister Bryan Acheampong, former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, are contesting for the slot.
