The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has renewed calls for the creation of a Media Development Fund to build the capacity of journalists and provide much-needed support for the country’s media industry.
Mr. Dwumfour argued that the proposed fund would not only enhance the professional skills of journalists but also serve as a lifeline for media organisations grappling with financial and operational difficulties.
“It is important we establish the Media Development Fund to help build the capacity of journalists and support the media in some aspects,” he stressed.
He made the appeal when the GJA leadership paid a courtesy call on President John Dramani Mahama, during which he also lobbied for government’s backing of the annual GJA Media Awards. He described the awards as a flagship platform for celebrating excellence and recognising exceptional contributions within the profession.
Mr. Dwumfour further suggested the introduction of special incentives to reward outstanding journalists, recalling an era when practitioners were honoured with significant packages such as vehicles and houses.
He lamented that these rewards have dwindled in recent years, insisting that reviving them would serve as powerful motivation for journalists who continue to demonstrate dedication to their work despite mounting challenges.
