Why Delegates Are Right to Stick With Kodua

Mussa Danquah of GlobalInfoAnalytics recently released a poll concerning the NPP’s General Secretary race (https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1CUFgmUXUS/) . In the report, Mussa’s results indicate a 44% lead for the current General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua. His close contender, Henry Kokofu, only had 6% of the vote share. According to Mussa, his target population was the actual delegates who would vote in the election scheduled for the national leadership. However, Mussa indicated that about 36% are undecided. Undoubtedly, if Kodua’s vote share does not drop or drops slightly and he manages to obtain even 10% of the undecided votes, he remains the best choice among the delegates.

I have also maintained that Lawyer Kodua’s tenure as a general secretary in the NPP took place amidst turbulence. Given his age and the level of maturity he has shown despite the challenges, he remains one of the most experienced individuals capable of guiding the party towards stability and recovery. Although we recognise that some aspects were not handled correctly in the interest of the grassroots as a whole, we also acknowledge that none of these lapses occurred in isolation. Kodua fought hard and did not waver in the face of any obstacles that arose.

Critics argue that the party’s defeat in the 2024 general election, including a significant loss of parliamentary seats, is a serious fault that should be attributed to Kodua. The events leading to the 2024 elections shaped the outcome. I do not believe Kodua remained inactive. If he had, the situation might have deteriorated further. When he was forced to organise a press conference urging his government to consider a reshuffle, it marked the most challenging moment for both the party and himself. People perceive him as voiceless. However, this is another mistaken impression. John Boadu, his immediate predecessor, was more mild and appeared unassertive. Even Boadu, being older and having enjoyed considerable goodwill in 2016 and 2020, looked different from Kodua in 2024. The comparison is entirely inappropriate.

Delegates and opponents alike must reckon with the facts: if the poll is as credible as it appears, Kodua is on solid footing to retain his seat. And more importantly, he is still the most qualified to lead the party forward.
