As Ghana mourns the sudden demise of eight brave individuals who perished in a plane crash, it has emerged that the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) is asking for postponment in the Akwatia by-election scheduled 1 September, 2024
The NDC is also asking the Electoral Commission (EC), political parties, and other stakeholders to similarly postppone the yet to be announced Tamale South by-election.
Despite the original plans, a former Deputy Communications Officer of the party in the Ashanti Region, Mr. Solomon Anane is of a strong reservation that the EC should give more time to enable the political parties to campign.
"It will be practically impossible for the National Democratic Congress to go to Akwatia to undertake effective campign from now to 20th of September, the nation and NDC as a political party is morning which means Akwatia will not get needed attention.", Mr. Anane stated on Kumasi-based Nhyira FM.
"In the case of Tamale South by-election, the EC is yet to notify parliament but for the Akwatia by-election," the Regional Boss for the GIFEC pointed out to host.
"I'm appealing to the stakeholders; the IPAC, EC, ok Parliament and all the political parties if it is possible for the elections to be postponed", Mr. Solomon Anane apealed .
Meanwhile, the National Organiser of NPP, Henry Nana Boakye, has called on NDC to withdraw from the by-election which is slated for September 2, 2025.
Speaking in an interview on JoyNews on August 11, 2025, Nana Boakye, aka Nana B, asserted that the NDC must withdraw from the Akwatia by-election, just as his party has withdrawn from the Tamale Central by-election, whose Member of Parliament, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, died in the tragic August 6 helicopter crash.
