The Ghana National Cathedral: A Misplaced Venture That Fell Short of Biblical Standards

The Ghana National Cathedral, envisioned as a monumental symbol of national unity and Christian faith, has instead become a focal point of controversy, financial mismanagement, and political fallout. Initiated by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, the project was envisioned as a sacred monument to honour God and serve as a national house of worship. However, its execution has been marred by controversy, financial mismanagement, and public disillusionment. What was meant to be a spiritual beacon has instead become a symbol of misplaced priorities both politically and biblically.

Misplaced Priorities in a Time of Crisis

The decision to invest millions of dollars into the cathedral during a time of economic hardship contradicted the biblical principle of caring for the needy.

Proverbs 21:13 warns:
“Whoever shuts their ears to the cry of the poor will also cry out and not be answered.”

While hospitals lacked beds and schools struggled with basic infrastructure, the government prioritized a grand edifice. This disconnect between leadership and the people’s needs was seen as a betrayal of public trust.

Lack of Stewardship and Planning
The cathedral project was plagued by cost overruns, lack of transparency, and procurement breaches. This violates the biblical principle of wise stewardship.

Luke 14:28-30 teaches:
“Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it?”

The failure to properly plan and account for the full cost of the project led to public outrage and a loss of credibility.

Justice and Integrity Compromised
The demolition of public buildings and the opaque handling of funds raised ethical concerns. Scripture emphasizes justice and righteousness as the foundation of leadership.

Isaiah 1:23 says:
“Your rulers are rebels, partners with thieves; they all love bribes and chase after gifts. They do not defend the cause of the fatherless; the widow’s case does not come before them.”

The perception that the project enriched a few at the expense of the many further alienated the public.

False Piety and Religious Symbolism
The use of religious symbolism to justify the project, despite its ethical failings, echoes the warnings of Jesus against outward displays of piety without inner righteousness.

Matthew 23:27-28:
“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs... on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.”

A cathedral built on injustice and mismanagement cannot truly honour God.

Political Consequences: A Biblical Parallel

The NPP’s historic defeat in the 2024 elections can be seen as a form of divine judgment, echoing biblical patterns where leaders who ignored justice and humility faced downfall.

Proverbs 16:18:
“Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.”

Jeremiah 22:13 also warns:
“Woe to him who builds his palace by unrighteousness, his upper rooms by injustice...”

The electorate’s rejection of the NPP was not just political—it was a moral reckoning.

The Ghana National Cathedral, though conceived with spiritual intent, became a cautionary tale of how sacred projects can be corrupted by poor governance and ethical lapses. Its failure to align with biblical principles of justice, stewardship, and humility not only tainted its legacy but also contributed to a seismic political shift.

If future leaders are to undertake such ventures, they must heed the wisdom of Micah 6:8: “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”

If future governments are to undertake such ventures, they must heed the wisdom of scripture and the voice of the people, lest they build monuments that crumble under the weight of misplaced priorities. Only then can national projects truly honour both God and the people.
