Nigerians in Ghana set the record straight on crime allegations

The leadership of the All Nigeria Community and the Igbo Community in Ghana’s Ashanti Region has strongly defended their members against rising allegations of criminal activity by some sections of the Ghanaian public.

Addressing a press conference in Kumasi, President of the All Nigeria Community in Ghana, Mr. Okafor Martins Chukwudi, rejected what he described as unfair and harmful generalisations linking Nigerians to crime.

Debunking the stereotype that Nigerians in Ghana are criminals, Mr. Chukwudi acknowledged that “some Nigerians in Ghana are into prostitution and others engaged in thievery.”

"But you can't make a general statement that all Nigerians are armed robbers or prostitutes. Our members are doing genuine businesses and we are paying our taxes to the Ghana government as law-abiding citizens,” he said.

"It would be wrong to have the impression that all Nigerians in Ghana are criminals," he added, urging the public to differentiate between isolated bad actors and the broader, peace-loving Nigerian community.

Mr. Chukwudi lamented the damage done by a few individuals whose illegal actions, he said, were unfairly tarnishing the image of an entire nationality. He pledged the community’s full cooperation with Ghana’s security agencies.

"We want to assure Ghanaians that Nigerians in this country are peaceful, hardworking, and law-abiding citizens who are contributing to the economic development of this great nation," he said. "We are ready to support the Ghana government to fight crimes and offer our support to the police service."

He further encouraged Nigerians living in Ghana to act as responsible ambassadors of their country by fostering peace, unity, and mutual respect between the two nations.

Mr. Chukwudi’s comments serve as a timely reminder of the need to challenge negative stereotypes and to promote understanding between communities for the benefit of regional harmony.
