Emergency shutdown of Weija treatment plant disrupts water supply across Western Accra — GWL assures swift repairs

The Accra West Region of Ghana Water Ltd. (GWL) has temporarily shut down the Weija Treatment Plant to undertake urgent repairs on a major pipeline system, resulting in widespread water outages across western Accra.

The shutdown, which commenced at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 2, is expected to last until 5:00 p.m., affecting dozens of communities reliant on the plant for daily water supply.

Areas currently impacted include Korle-Bu, Dansoman, Mamprobi, Weija, Gbawe, Malam, Anyaa, Kwashieman, Ablekuma, Darkuman, Kaneshie, Tesano, Odorkor, Sowutuom, Lapaz, Achimota (parts), North Industrial Area, and adjoining communities.

GWL explained that the decision was made to repair critical faults on the pipeline network, a move the company says is vital to preventing long-term infrastructure failure and to securing reliable service delivery going forward.

“Our engineers are on site working hard to ensure that the work is completed on schedule,” the company stated in an official release Wednesday morning.

The utility provider extended its apologies for the inconvenience caused by the shutdown and appealed to residents in affected areas to use water judiciously until full service is restored.

“We understand the disruption this may cause and are doing everything possible to minimise the impact. Water supply will resume promptly once repairs are complete,” GWL assured.

The company urged customers to report any anomalies once service is restored and promised to keep the public updated on the progress of the work.
