GRNMA strike: Government must act quickly to avert further pain to Ghanaians — Ahiagbah

The National Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has called on the government to act swiftly to end the ongoing strike by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA).

The NPP spokesperson lamented that the strike is worsening conditions in health facilities across the country.

“Patients are caught in the middle of this issue. The government must act quickly to avert further pain to Ghanaians,” Ahiagbah said in a social media post on Tuesday, June 10.

The GRNMA declared an industrial action last week to demand the implementation of its 2024 Collective Agreement, which includes unpaid allowances and delayed postings.

Key demands under the agreement include a 13th-month salary, fuel and medical allowances, rural incentive allowances, renewal of practising licences, and provision of uniforms.

Ahiagbah accused the John Mahama-led administration of turning its back on nurses while budgeting billions of cedis for the Jubilee House.

According to him, the government has allocated about GHS2.71 billion in compensation to the seat of government in the 2025 budget but has failed to address what he called a “small adjustment due to the nurses.”

“The ongoing standoff between the government and the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association demonstrates an apparent disregard for nurses’ invaluable contributions to our healthcare delivery system,” he wrote.

He added, “It is unfair that the Jubilee House budgets some GHS2.71 billion in compensation for itself but ignores the small adjustment due to the nurses.”
