Let Us Care for Our Honorable Teachers – Yes, We Can Make It Happen

Are we truly caring? Leadership is more than a title; it is a commitment to improving lives. If Ghanaian teachers, headmasters and educational directors continue to struggle despite decades of leadership changes, then true leadership is yet to be realized.

How much does a simple Toyota Corolla cost that our leaders cannot envision providing one for headmasters and headteachers? Is it an impossibility or simply a lack of concern for making teaching attractive? Even political parties overlook graduate teachers in favor of uneducated associates for key party positions like party chairpersons, further undervaluing the profession.

Teachers Deserve Better. For centuries, the teaching profession has been neglected, making it increasingly unappealing in Ghana. A young man once taught at Shama High School without owning even a bicycle. However, upon moving to the United States, he now owns a Highlander. Should our teachers walk to school and attend meetings drenched in sweat while leaders enjoy luxury?

Leadership should be about influencing lives and improving systems, yet in Ghana, governance often benefits a select few while many citizens struggle.

Can We Care? Headmasters and headteachers at basic and secondary levels deserve support to own vehicles for their work. This should not be seen as an impossible demand but as a necessary motivation for educators. If teachers must struggle to own a car, how can the profession inspire new generations? In the U.S., owning a car is common for teachers, yet in Ghana, it remains a major challenge.

"Can we care?" is not just a rhetorical question, it is a call to action, urging leaders to make life meaningful for Ghana’s honorable teachers. Owning a basic car in the 21st century should not be out of reach for educators.

Let Our Leaders Care Now. Teachers deserve decency, dignity, respectability and motivation. Yet, their social and economic struggles make them the least-supported professionals in the country. Nothing truly motivates teachers to stay committed. Some leave the profession for politics, where they instantly enjoy privileges unavailable to teachers.

The government must act, partnering with Pacific Manufacturing Company in the U.S. to supply affordable Toyota Corollas for teachers—enhancing morale and restoring respect for the profession.

Basic necessities should never be denied to our honorable teachers. Ghana’s future depends on them, let’s invest in their dignity and success.
