Alfred Ababio Kumi, known widely as Adenta Kumi and a youth activist affiliated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has been freed from the National Investigations Bureau’s (NIB) custody.
His release came after intensive discussions involving security officials and the Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
Kumi was initially detained on Friday, May 23, 2025, facing charges related to the publication of false news.
These charges arose from statements he made on his X (formerly Twitter) account and during a radio interview concerning a petition he submitted to the President of Ghana. The petition demanded the dissolution of the committee currently probing the Chief Justice.
In the petition, Kumi accused certain judiciary members of misconduct, which he argued could undermine the investigation’s credibility. He specifically alleged that on May 15, 2025, following the committee’s first meeting, Justices Pwamang and Adibu-Asiedu, together with Supreme Court Justice Yonni Kulendi, were seen dining with Thaddeus Sory, the legal counsel for petitioner Daniel Ofori, at Santoku Restaurant in the Airport Residential Area of Accra.
Kumi further claimed that the group was overheard discussing matters related to the ongoing petition.
The situation has drawn significant political attention due to concerns about judicial independence and freedom of speech, with Kumi’s supporters contending that his arrest was driven by political motives.
