Vice President Opoku-Agyemang back from medical treatment abroad

Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has returned to Ghana after spending several weeks in the United Kingdom for advanced medical care, following a sudden health scare earlier this year.

Her health became a matter of national attention after reports emerged that she had fallen ill on Friday, March 28, 2025.

She was swiftly admitted to the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) the following day for initial treatment.

According to a statement from the Office of the President issued on March 30, she was stabilized and subsequently flown abroad for further care as a precautionary measure.

The Vice President’s return marks the end of her medical leave, with her recovery described by close sources as complete. She is now expected to resume her official duties in the coming days.

President John Dramani Mahama, while addressing supporters during his Thank You Tour in Dodowa on Friday, May 16, provided an update on her condition. “The Vice President has recovered fully,” he announced to cheers from the crowd, adding his heartfelt thanks for the nation’s prayers and support during her time of illness.

“I'm happy to state that I spoke to her yesterday morning, and she will be back in the country before the end of next week. By God's grace, she is fully recovered and she's going to come and go back to her duties,” he announced.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang, a respected academic and stateswoman, has served as Vice President since January 2025 under the Mahama administration. Her sudden illness had raised widespread concern, given her central role in national policy direction and leadership.

Her return to Ghana has been met with relief and well-wishes from across the political spectrum, signaling not only her personal resilience but also a return to full strength for the presidency.
