In a significant step towards bolstering security and improving community policing, Ghana’s Minister for Interior, Hon. Mustaka Mohammed Mubarak, has commissioned a newly constructed ultra-modern police station at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA).

The facility, a product of collaboration between UPSA and the Ghana Police Service, is equipped with cutting-edge features designed to enhance operational efficiency and public service delivery. The new station houses a case management office, a station officer's office, a Criminal Investigations Department (CID) office, a cell lobby, a kitchenette, male and female washrooms, a visitor’s washroom, and ample parking space.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Hon. Mubarak praised UPSA’s leadership for their vision and commitment to campus safety, acknowledging the university’s pivotal role in driving the project forward.

“I wish to commend the Vice-Chancellor and management of UPSA for their foresight and dedication in partnering with the Ghana Police Service to bring this police station to life,” the Minister said. “This facility is not just a building; it is a hub for security operations and a symbol of our collective commitment to ensuring the safety of our communities.”

He emphasised that the police station will serve as a critical centre for both police operations and community engagement, enabling law enforcement officers to respond more swiftly and efficiently to emerging security issues.

Hon. Mubarak also reaffirmed the Mahama-led government’s commitment to strengthening the country’s security infrastructure and institutions. “The current administration, under the leadership of His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, is fully committed to resourcing and supporting all security agencies to deliver on their mandate,” he said. “We will continue to provide the needed tools, logistics, and facilities to empower our officers in their line of duty.”

He encouraged members of the UPSA community to actively collaborate with the police, highlighting the importance of shared responsibility in maintaining a safe and secure environment. “Let us work hand in hand with our police officers. Security is a shared duty, and with your support, we can build a culture of vigilance, cooperation, and peace,” he added.

The Interior Minister further charged officers assigned to the new station to uphold professionalism, utilise the facility effectively, and engage with the public in addressing their concerns. “This police station marks a new chapter in the collective pursuit of safety and security for all. Let us rise to the occasion and meet the expectations of the people we serve,” he concluded.

Prof. John Kwaku Mensah Mawutor, Vice-Chancellor of UPSA, also expressed appreciation to the government and key stakeholders for their contributions to the realisation of the project. He noted that the establishment of the police station was a timely and strategic intervention that would significantly enhance the safety of students, staff, and the surrounding communities.

“This police station is an important milestone in our journey to make UPSA not only a centre of academic excellence but also a secure space for learning, innovation, and growth,” Prof. Mawutor remarked. “We are grateful to the government, the Inspector General of Police, and the contractor, FT Global Investment Ltd., for their unwavering support in bringing this project to completion.”

He also lauded former Vice-Chancellor Prof. Abednego Feehi Okoe Amartey and former IGP Dr. George Akufo Dampare, under whose leadership the project was initiated in 2023. “We cannot forget the role played by Prof. Amartey, who laid the foundation for this achievement. It is a testament to what continuity and shared vision can accomplish,” he said.

Prof. Mawutor further appealed to the government to consider UPSA’s request for additional land to support the university’s ongoing expansion efforts. “One of our major challenges is access to land for development. We hope that the government will support us in acquiring more land to meet the growing demands of the institution,” he added.
