The National Security Intimidation And Harassment Of Innocent Ghanaians Must Be Checked; An Open Letter To President Mahama

Feature Article The National Security Intimidation And Harassment Of Innocent Ghanaians Must Be Checked; An Open Letter To President Mahama
MON, 24 MAR 2025

Dear President Mahama!

You have had the advantage of ruling this Country and your second coming shouldn't be an avenue to intimidate, harass, and oppress the opposition Party members and Ghanaians at large.

It's quite unfortunate since your inauguration to steer the affairs of the Country. But what's transpiring under your watch as the commander in Chief of the Armed Forces is mind-boggling.

Mr. President, you campaigned to reset the Country and promised to do a lot, especially at the back of the 24-hour economy as the panacea to create more jobs for the teeming youth.

However, your reset has been characterized by terror, indiscipline, intimidation, and harassment of innocent people who are waiting for you to fulfill your social contract with them.

Unfortunately, the use of the National Security and other security agencies like the National Investigative Bureau (NIB) to terrorize innocent people, especially members of the previous government is uncalled for.

Not quite long ago, Mr. President, the National Security led by Richard Jakpa, raided the house of the Former Finance Minister, Hon. Ken Ofori Atta, simply to effect an arrest.

Likely enough, the Former Finance Minister was out of the Country and your hoodlums who besieged the House ransacked and intimidated members of the Former Finance Minister's family members who were around at that time.

Indeed, after that incident, some Ghanaians expressed disgust and unhappiness with the above Security apparatus, and this caught the attention of the Nation. The Majority leader and some members of Parliament also condemned that barbaric act accordingly.

I'm scandalous and taken aback, monitoring closely what's ongoing with the new administration led by you, H.E. President Mahama, where you described yourself as the Messiah with the reset agenda to put Ghana back on track.

Ironically, Mr. President, you are doing the opposite of what you promised to deliver to the benefit of the Ghanaian people. Why do I say so? What you kicked and campaigned against is what you are doing exactly with the high level of intimidation and barbaric attacks on innocent souls.

A President who campaigned to bring back freedom of speech, movement, and Association uses state security to subject and gag past and some journalists against freedom of expression.

The high level of oppression is out of hand just within three months of your administration, where the culture of silence and our democracy are under threat for the use of National Security to cause an unlawful arrest of people.

For the purposes of clarity, Former President Nana Addo and the NPP administration were tagged as a government that subjected Ghanaians to some level of culture of silence, and the so-called neutrals were on the neck of the President then with all manner of derogatory remarks on his person.

It's quite absurd that the beneficiary of this tag of the previous government is now practicing what the NPP administration never did, close to what's transpiring with a lack of tolerance and victimization of innocent souls who express their outbursts on some of the negative decisions taken by your administration.

Realistically, no one is in support of insults and maligning and vilification of government officials but the NDC in opposition supported a so-called journalist outside the Country called Kevin Tailor. This guy used plain insults and maligned all manner of people even to the extent of disrespecting our revered Kings and Chiefs in Ghana with impunity.

He does that and continues to do so with the help of the National Democratic Congress, NDC since he was doing their bidding. How does the NDC support such a loudmouth character and find it difficult to contain someone who sets the record straight and devoid of unnecessary drama and attacks?

As we all thought the level of intimidation and counter-disapproval by some sections of Ghanaians would have silenced the notorious gang called National Security, they went ahead to unlawfully arrest the host of the much-talked-about show "For the Records".

The Host had a heated banter with NDC's darling boy Kevin Tailor some weeks ago where he stated they would deal with the Kwame Afrifa on his live show outside Ghana.

He was later sabotaged by the Ministry of Communication and Digitalization during his life show which ended abruptly due to attempts to make things difficult for a smooth sail of the program.

The above scenarios depict the lack of tolerance by the new administration led by you, President Mahama, and your cohorts. Your government is unprepared to withstand just a quarter of the dose that you dished out to the NPP administration for 8 years.

In all honesty, our democracy is under threat because of the level of silence Mr. Mahama and his family and Friends Government wants to portray and whip innocent souls in line and also prevent them from articulating their views and opinions without any fear.

Mr Richard Jakpa was at it again when he led about 20 armed National Security members to raid the Former Governor of the Bank of Ghana House. Jakpa and his cohorts stormed the place where a military regime ransacked the whole place and destroyed his CCTV installation in the House.

After the news broke, the Minority leader, Hon.Alexander Kwabena Afenyo-Markin, visited the House of the Former Governor of the Bank of Ghana to sympathize and ascertain the level of destruction carried out by these hoodlums.

Per reliable information from the Former Governor of the Bank of Ghana, he said Jakpa and his gang make away some amount of money and jewelry. Is that what the reset agenda is all about? Your guess is as good as mine.

Mr. President, with all due respect, the above brute force used by National Security isn't what you promised Ghanaians and it's high time for you to put your foot on the ground and show leadership to safeguard and protect our growing democracy.

Ghana is described as the beacon of our democracy in Africa and the whole at large, and it's imperative for you as the commander in Chief of the Armed Forces to uphold and defend our democratic principles and values and call your National Security operations to order.

Instructively, you have a four-year mandate to rule, and a level of intimidation and barbaric harassment must be checked to protect your image and the Country as a whole. This is not what campaigned vigorously on.

Mr. President, in conclusion, the National Security operatives must know their duties and never indulge in unnecessary drama. You can deploy them to galamsey areas since they want to work to protect our water bodies and forest reserves.

Ghana belongs to us all, and since you are privileged to be the first gentleman of the land, you have every right to protect the Citizenry devoid of Party colours.

Long live Ghana!

Shalom!
