I am struggling to find the appropriate description of the situation in Ghana as of now considering the alarming rate of fire outbreaks. Are we in a fire season, fire epidemic, fire crisis or perhaps an arson wave? Whatever it is,our approach to solving this needs to shift from a reactive one to a preventive one.
I joined a team to visit a family that suffered an inferno, offering our sympathy and assistance. While inspecting their home razed by the fire,a member of the team noticed this religious book, which he mistook for the Christian Bible.
It is actually the book of Mormon,a religious book written by Joseph Smith, the founder of the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints. He was succeeded by Brigham Young who is behind the popular saying “You educate a man; you educate a man. You educate a woman; you educate a generation.”It was popularised in Ghana by the late Kwegyir Aggrey. This is arguably the wealthiest Christian religious body in the world, surpassing the Catholic church in recent times.
Interestingly, as this team member observed the book was not totally devoured by the fire,he slipped quickly into a character of religiosity, instantly evangelizing the power of the Bible. He suggested that the bible is so powerful that it always survives fire outbreaks.
Even as he wasn't willing to listen to me demystify this incident, I explained that in combustion, there must be three constant elements(fuel, oxygen and heat) and the absence of any may have caused the Phenomena. In this case the book was partially burnt and could be pinned on the absence or inadequacy of any of these elements. However, most Bibles, just as this religious book, was made with leather and thick hardcovers that are almost incombustible or nonflammable.
I believe in God as much as you do,moreover using such instances to project the power of God is misleading.God doesn't need to have the home and properties of a poor family destroyed and leave a bible partially burnt or untouched to prove a point.
Among the many reasons why such fires occur is the human factor.Lets be measured in seizing the moments we need to empathise and support grieving people to express our over religious and self serving positions on religion.
Would you accept the same posture from a satanist,if their thick leather cover "Satanic Bible" remained unburnt after an inferno?Would you accept that as a miracle, or a physical endorsement and validation of their religion?
GOD IS BIGGER THAN THIS.
