Students of St. John Bosco College of Education, Navrongo, in the Upper East Region on March 15, 2025 held a press conference to express their frustrations and concerns over pressing issues affecting them.
The spokesperson, Mr. Gabriel Appiah, stated in his speech that their four-year stay in the college had been marked by numerous challenges. "Challenges are part of life, especially that of a student," he quoted.
According to Mr. Appiah, the issues that necessitated the press conference include students’ inability to access the Student Information Portal, changes in courses on their portals, mismatched results, incorrect bio-data, and other related concerns.
He stressed that about 76 trainee students have been unable to access their portals. "During the second semester of our level 400, we were asked to create portals for our student data, which we did, but some can't access their results."
Mr. Appiah also highlighted that students' bio-data on the portal had been mismatched, with errors in details such as dates of birth, names, sex, and programs. He expressed fears that such mistakes might appear on their final certificates. "How will a gentleman brag of a certificate bearing the sex 'female' let alone defend it?" he emphasized.
Another major concern he raised was the failure of management to publish results on the school notice board, especially when students are informed that they have failed certain courses. "How do you tell someone he or she has failed without showing his or her results?" he questioned.
Mr. Appiah clarified that their call for action was not to undermine the institution’s efforts but to demand lasting solutions to issues related to their results and academic records. He noted that despite several engagements with management to address their complaints, no concrete action had been taken, despite repeated promises.
The students are, therefore, calling on the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), the Ghana Education Service, the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission, and all relevant stakeholders to intervene and address their concerns.
