Joseph Osei Owusu has disclosed that he was initially considered as the running mate for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the 2024 elections but had to decline the offer due to health reasons.
Speaking on Asetene Pa with Akoto Mansa which was monitored by MyNewsGH, Osei Owusu revealed that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) leadership approached him to partner with Bawumia, and even then-President Nana Akufo-Addo personally called him to persuade him to accept the position.
“I was poised to become the running mate of the NPP, but I had to flatly turn down the offer due to my health at the time.
“Even President Akufo-Addo called me, asking me to explain my refusal, but I stood my ground,” the Bekwai MP disclosed.
Following his decision to step aside, the party eventually settled on Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO) as Bawumia’s running mate.
However, the NPP went on to suffer a crushing defeat in the elections, a result that has since sparked debates about whether Osei Owusu’s rejection had an impact on the party’s chances.
