Angels Among Us

Angels Among Us

My sister and I were returning to Koforidua, when our car broke down, after passing Ejisu township, on a road trip from Kumasi.

I opened the bonnet/hood and saw the car’s serpentine belt, was broken.

I had a replacement belt with me, but I did not have, the tools and technical expertise.

I began to signal to other motorists for help. Many vehicles drove past me, totally ignoring my signals for help.

Two vehicles eventually, stopped to inquire about my problem.

The first to stop was a dark-blue saloon car. Several people were on that vehicle.

They made faces at me after listening to my story, and quickly, sped off.

I was not perturbed. After all, it was a Saturday evening; Sunday was not a workday.

I knew, help was on the way. (This event occurred in the early 1990’s, when cellular phones were not available).

Moments later, another vehicle stopped for me. It was a Mercedes Benz salon car. Two men got off this vehicle. They were each, wearing a white polo-shirt and white short pants,

Their vibrations were much high. I assumed, they were Upper middle-class Kumasi Guys who, were driving home from Accra.

They brought a portable toolbox from their vehicle and took no time in replacing the belt.

I dipped my hand into my back pocket. I had intended to offer them whatever money I carried on me, for their effort.

They declined; they only smiled and said, “We watch out for are Each Other”

That was thirty years ago; I cannot remember their faces, but that event left a permanent mark on my mind.

This recalls, a song by Don Goodman & Becky Hobbs, “”

I believe there are Angels
Sent down to us from somewhere up above.

They come to you and me in our darkest hours.

To show us how to live, to teach us how to give.

To guide us with the light of love.
