The Northern Region branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has condemned the assault on two journalists at Walewale in the North East Region.

A statement signed by Mr Yakubu Abdul Majeed, Northern Region Chairman of GJA and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Tamale on Thursday explained that the two journalists, Mr Alhassan Dokurugu, a reporter with Asaase Radio and Mr Tahiru Ibrahim of Zaa Multimedia were assaulted while covering an incident involving the burning of a bus at Walewale.

The statement said the journalists were assaulted by Military Personnel in the presence of Police Officers at the Nalerigu junction at Walewale in the North East Region.

It indicated “We view this incident as a blatant attack on press freedom, and gross violation of the fundamental human rights of the journalists. We unequivocally denounce this act and demand that the military identify and discipline the personnel who carried out this act”.

The statement further reminded security agencies to recognise that, “we live in a civilized society where the rights of every citizen must be respected”.
