President John Dramani Mahama has nominated Asuogyaman Member of Parliament, Thomas Nyarko Ampem, as a Deputy Minister for Finance.
The appointment, announced in a formal communication from the presidency on Wednesday, February 5, was in accordance with Articles 78(1) and 79(1) of the 1992 Constitution.
The list includes 12 other deputy minister nominees, such as Yussif Sulemana for Lands and Natural Resources and Alhassan Suhuyini for Roads and Highways.
“President John Dramani Mahama has, in accordance with Articles 78(1) and 79(1) of the Constitution, submitted the names of the underlisted to Parliament, through the Speaker, for prior approval to serve as deputy ministers,” the statement signed by the acting spokesperson to the president, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, read in part.
Brief profile of Thomas Nyarko Ampem:
Thomas Nyarko Ampem was born on February 14, 1978, and hails from Anum in the Eastern Region of Ghana.
He obtained an MSc in Finance in 2010 from Virginia Commonwealth University in the United States. Prior to earning his master’s degree, he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Geography from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
Nyarko Ampem previously served as chairman of the Budget Committee in the Eighth Parliament of the Fourth Republic, where he oversaw and scrutinized government spending.
He was also a member of the Finance Committee from 2020 to 2024, where he made invaluable contributions.
From April 2012 to September 2013, Ampem worked as director of finance for the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee (IMCC) on Decentralisation at the Office of the President.
He will be working with the sector’s substantive minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, who has been charged with restoring the country’s economic fortunes.
