FOSDA welcomes Ghana’s first ever Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment

The Foundation for Security and Development in Africa (FOSDA) welcomes Ghana’s Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment Mr. George Opare Addo following his swearingin on Friday, 24th January 2025.

FOSDA urges Mr. Addo to bring to bear his rich and vast experiences in youth development and his role as Municipal Chief Executive for Akwapim North Municipal to impact youth development and empowerment issues in Ghana.

As the First Minister for this maiden and historic independent Ministry of Youth Development, we encourage the Honourable Minister to prioritise key youth development issues including Youth Unemployment, Education, especially Technical, Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as well as Youth participation in decision and policy making processes as the top three priorities of the youth in Ghana as captured by the Ghana Youth Manifesto 2024 and beyond. We also encourage the Honourable Minister to also prioritise the establishment of the Ghana Youth Federation as envisaged in the National Youth Authority Act 2016 as the voice of the youth.

Having worked and engaged the Ghanaian Youth over the last ten years by facilitating the establishment of a National and Regional youth networks, FOSDA strongly believes that young people are assets and must not be securitised. We urge the Minister to strategically coordinate youth development programmes and policies across all Ministries, Departments and Agencies to address the issue of duplication and ensure value for money for the youth of Ghana. We urge that the new Ministry should be guided by the National Youth Policy 2022 – 2032.

FOSDA is committed to supporting the Ministry’s vision through collaboration, innovation, and strategic partnerships. We look forward to working with the Ministry to create impactful programs, enhance youth participation in governance, and provide platforms for dialogue on matters of concern to the youth from time to time.
