Ghana has proudly earned a reputation as a beacon of peaceful elections, inspiring many nations across Africa. However, recent electoral outcomes warrant our attention, as post-election periods in the Fourth Republic have seen unsettling instances of property damage and unrest by some political supporters. These individuals often feel entitled to act against those from the previous administration. I find myself reflecting on the necessity of dialogue and respect within our democracy rather than resorting to forceful actions that threaten our progress. Addressing this issue is crucial, as it directly impacts Ghana's democratic values and integrity. I have been reflecting on whether it is truly necessary for party supporters to forcibly evict individuals perceived as political opponents from their offices and resort to plundering and violence against them. This issue concerns me deeply, as such actions compromise the country's democratic integrity.
The primary perpetrators of this political hooliganism are supporters of Ghana's two main political parties, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC). For example, in 2017, shortly after the Nana Addo government assumed office, a vigilante organization known as Delta Force, which is affiliated with the NPP, attempted to remove the Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator. This was because their party had assumed power and the Security Coordinator was perceived as a sympathizer of the NDC.
Subsequently, Delta Force members impersonating as National Security operatives accosted DCOP Ayensu Opare Addo (Rtd), the Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator, following the 2020 election. They were adamant about removing him from his office because he was there on the ticket of the NDC.
Drawbacks of political hooliganism
These contemptible acts are often seen by party supporters as a form of amusement or a fair distribution of the resources they have worked hard to accumulate. However, it is essential to recognize that these challenges certainly impact the everyday lives of our wonderful citizens and can shake their sense of security. It is understandable that many people may feel concerned about their safety and the stability of their businesses, as well as the country’s ability to attract investors. However, addressing these issues can lead to a brighter future, where citizens enjoy peace of mind and businesses flourish without interruptions. A stable Ghana is key to boosting investor confidence and fostering a thriving economy for all
Solutions
To reduce the occurrence of incidents involving the police, the country’s police service must operate independently, be well-resourced, and remain free from partisan politics. Achieving this requires a comprehensive overhaul. The police service should be decentralized to improve relations between the police and the community. Additionally, the current practice of politically appointing police commanders should be replaced with a competitive recruitment process. A new governance structure should be established, consisting of individuals with specialized knowledge in policing, such as academics and practitioners, to oversee police operations effectively.
Addressing the fundamental causes of post-election violence requires collaboration among political leaders, security agencies, and civil society organizations. A multi-stakeholder approach is essential to ensure accountability for perpetrators and to prevent the recurrence of such incidents in the future. Additionally, those responsible for violence must face severe penalties. Ultimately, the youth of this nation should resist using their bodies as tools for political violence and, instead, focus on building a more promising future for themselves and their communities.
Ghanaians must bear in mind that together, we can promote understanding and peace, ensuring that our vibrant democratic landscape flourishes for all citizens and sets a positive example for the continent. Let’s work toward a future where every voice is respected, and our democracy thrives and stop these political hooliganism.
