I was against the shooting; the police officer has apologised — Muntaka

The Minister of Interior-designate, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, has reacted to the incident in which an officer from his security detail fired gunshots to celebrate his ministerial nomination.

Addressing the incident during his vetting by Parliament's Appointments Committee on Friday, January 24, 2025, Muntaka expressed strong disapproval of the police officer's actions, which have since drawn heavy criticism from the general public.

According to the Asawase lawmaker, he advised his team against firing the shots. However, despite his warning, they proceeded to fire the gun, which is why he stepped in to stop the act.

"I was vehemently against that shooting in my house. I told them not to do. That was why I came out," he said.

Muntaka further added that the officer involved has since offered an apology and expressed remorse for his actions.

"I've since made the officer apologise for it. It has gone viral because I didn't think that was right."

Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka received a gun salute from his security team following the announcement of his appointment as the Minister of the Interior-designate by President John Dramani Mahama.

In a video posted on X on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, the lawmaker, dressed in an all-white kaftan and smiling over the news, was seen celebrating his appointment.

His security detail, in a show of respect and celebration, fired about seven rounds of gunshots into the air before proceeding to shake hands and congratulate him.
