Dr. Benjamin Otchere-Ankrah has criticized both illegal miners and military personnel following a confrontation at AngloGold Ashanti's Obuasi mine that left eight individuals dead.
He called the miners' actions reckless and urged restraint, emphasizing that such tragedies are avoidable.
Some illegal miners were shot and killed over the weekend for trespassing the AngloGold Ashanti’s mine shaft.
The deceased and others who sustained gunshot wounds suffered such fate due to a confrontation between them and military personnel guarding the facility, according to reports.
The confrontation led to about 8 people being killed, according to reports.
Reacting to this during Peace FM’s 'Kokrokoo’ morning show on Friday, Dr. Otchere-Ankrah expressed concerns over the behavior of the victims as well as the reaction of the Military.
According to him, it was needless for the intruders to have gone into the AngloGold concession.
He noted that the Military is trained “to kill”, therefore, it was utterly needless for the miners to have confronted them.
Even though he does not subscribe to the military shooting the people, he said the miners’ approach was condemnable and unacceptable.
He advised the citizens, particularly the youth and residents at Obuasi to put on their thinking cap, stating, “you have to be controlled by your head, not your heart.”
