Television host Captain Smart has come under fire following allegations that his comments may have incited the illegal miners who recently invaded the AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) mine in Obuasi, leading to a tragic incident.
A video circulating on social media captures Captain Smart allegedly inciting the youth in Obuasi to rise against AGA, claiming that the company was exploiting the region while leaving its residents impoverished.
Speaking on Accra-based Onua TV, he stated, “Ghanaian youth in Obuasi, go to the mine. Attack the mine and take what you want so that when you get hungry, you get something to eat.
“AGA, if you are not careful, we will chase you out of this country, I swear!... How can these people do this in this country? The youth of Obuasi need to rise…”
The comments have sparked outrage, with many accusing Captain Smart of unprofessional misconduct that must be pinned down before it is too late.
Prominent journalist Vim Lady, a known associate of Captain Smart, publicly condemned his remarks, stating that they were irresponsible and could have fueled the chaos.
The situation escalated when a group of illegal miners invaded the AGA mine, resulting in a clash with security forces.
About nine (9) miners reportedly lost their lives, and several others sustained injuries during the violent confrontation with military personnel from Operation Calm Life, who were guarding the site.
According to the Ghana Armed Forces, their troops fired in self-defense after being attacked by the miners.
President John Dramani Mahama has ordered an investigation into the incident and directed AGA to cover medical expenses for the injured and ensure proper burial arrangements for the deceased.
