I want to be known as 'Osahene' not ‘Mr’— Afenyo-Markin 

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has officially requested to be addressed as "Osahene" Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, rather than "Mr," referencing the significance of the title conferred upon him by his uncle, the Omanhene of the Efuttu Traditional Council.

Speaking in Parliament, Afenyo-Markin clarified that "Osahene" is not a chieftaincy title but a traditional designation granted after undergoing a formal customary process.

He emphasized that he has earned the title and would like it to be recognized in all official and legislative works.

“Mr Speaker, when doing the registration, you’re supposed to fill in a title—whether Dr., Mr., Alhaji, Professor, and others. If the Honourable Majority Whip so pleases, I shall produce, for purposes of the Hansard, the origin of my title Osahene.

“It is a title conferred on me by my uncle, the Omanhene of the Efuttu Traditional Council, and I’m to use it. I prefer to use that title, so I do not think there should be any problem with it,” he stated.

Afenyo-Markin further explained that the title was officially bestowed on him during a traditional council meeting, underscoring its legitimacy and prominence in his community.

“I’m of that family; he is my uncle, and it was not done in private. It was the traditional council that met, and officially, through custom, it was conferred on me. It is not a chieftaincy title. It is not a chieftaincy title.”

The Minority Leader asserted that the use of "Osahene" should be treated with the same respect as other titles such as "Dr.," "Alhaji," or "Professor."

“Mr Speaker, I rest my case. I want to be known not as Mr. but Osahene Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, and that is how I filled my form. It is my title, just as people want to be called Mr., Dr., or Alhaji—they’ve earned it,” he stated.

While Afenyo-Markin did not elaborate on the exact meaning of "Osahene," the title is traditionally associated with leadership and valor in Akan culture, often bestowed on individuals who have distinguished themselves in service or as protectors of their community.
