President John Dramani Mahama’s inauguration on January 7, 2025, was marked by a significant and symbolic fashion choice, as he opted for a regal agbada adorned with rich Ghanaian Kente and four prominent Adinkra symbols displayed as a ‘breastplate.’
The traditional outfit deviated from his usual smock or Western-style suit and tie, instead reflecting a deep connection to Ghanaian heritage and the values he brings to his presidency.
Each Adinkra symbol carried a profound meaning, emphasising principles central to Mahama’s leadership.
Nyame Dua (Tree of God): Representing the Tree of Life, this symbol embodies purification and blessings.
Sankofa (Go Back for It): Highlights the importance of learning from the past to shape a better future.
Gye Nyame (Except God): A testament to God’s omnipotence, signifying that nothing can be achieved without divine guidance.
Dwennimmen (Ram’s Horn): Reflecting strength and humility, virtues integral to effective leadership.
Mahama’s attire showcased a blend of cultural pride and embodied values tied to Ghanaian identity.
The inauguration at Accra’s iconic Black Star Square marked Mahama’s return to the presidency after a resounding electoral victory.
At 66, he won the December 7 election by over 1.6 million votes, regaining leadership of the West African nation and reinforcing Ghana’s status as a democratic beacon in a region often challenged by instability.
The ceremony was attended by over 20 presidents and heads of state, symbolizing global recognition of Ghana’s democratic tradition.
