Dr Arthur Kennedy, a leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has called for the rebuilding of the party along its founding principles following the party’s loss in the 2024 presidential election.

In a write-up, Dr Kennedy, who was suspended from the NPP in 2015, attributed the party’s defeat to corruption, incompetence, arrogance, and disregard for national interests.

He said these factors contributed to the rejection of the party by Ghanaians at the polls.

“The people have spoken. They rejected corruption, incompetence, arrogance, and the reckless disregard for the national interest,” he stated.

He added that the party’s selection of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as its presidential candidate, amidst the prevailing economic and governance challenges, worsened the situation.

Dr Kennedy lamented the deterioration of the party’s leadership, contrasting the current crop of leaders with the party’s founding figures, including J.B. Danquah and Professor Adu Boahen.

He accused some party members of prioritizing personal gain over the collective good of the NPP.

He further encouraged party faithful to embrace the defeat as a wake-up call to realign with the values of selflessness, integrity, and service to Ghanaians.

“The NPP can and must be rebuilt based on its founding principles,” he emphasized.

Dr Kennedy’s comments come after the Electoral Commission declared John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the winner of the 2024 presidential election, securing 56.55% of the valid votes cast. Dr Bawumia, the NPP’s candidate, garnered 41.61%.
