Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, the Kingdom of Eswatini and Lesotho, Mrs. Francisca Ashietey Odunton, has congratulated Professor (Dr. Dr. Dr.) Joseph Kwasi Agyemang on his historic achievement as the first person globally to earn three distinct PhDs in accounting.
During a meeting with Professor Agyemang, members of the Ghanaian business community, and the Ghanaian Consul to Eswatini, Mrs. Odunton praised Professor Agyemang’s accomplishment, emphasizing its role in elevating Ghana’s reputation on the world stage.
“I’m truly impressed by your achievement, sir. I hope other Ghanaians will feel inspired and motivated to follow your example, working diligently in their own fields to proudly raise the flag of Ghana,” Mrs. Odunton stated.
Mrs. Odunton expressed further admiration for Professor Agyemang’s role as a Professor Extraordinarius at the University of South Africa (UNISA), and she assured him that his achievements would be communicated to the Ghanaian government for appropriate recognition.
Professor Agyemang, in turn, applauded the Ghanaian government’s STEM education initiative at the senior high school level. However, he encouraged Mrs. Odunton to advocate for an extension of this programme to primary and junior high schools, believing this expansion would solidify the current gains in STEM education and accelerate national development.
“STEM education accelerated the development of Western countries and those in Asia, and Ghana stands to gain enormously from it as well,” Professor Agyemang added.
Addressing a recent law in the Kingdom of Eswatini that bars foreigners from teaching once their contracts expire, some Ghanaian teachers affected by the regulation asked Mrs. Odunton if they could be absorbed into the Ghana Education Service (GES) upon their return to Ghana. Mrs. Odunton replied that their chances of being hired by GES would depend on their educational qualifications. She also mentioned that the government of Seychelles has expressed interest in hiring Ghanaian teachers, providing an alternative opportunity for those seeking employment.
The Director of a private school in Eswatini, Unique Academy, and a Ghanaian, Mr. John Kingsley Fokuo, who organized the meeting, suggested that Professor Agyemang should consider establishing a university bearing his name to immortalize his groundbreaking achievements.
