Akufo-Addo upgrades status of 15 local assemblies to Municipalities and Metropolises

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has granted executive approval for the upgrade of 15 local assemblies in the country.

The changes elevate several districts to municipalities and upgrade municipalities to metropolitan status, a decision expected to bolster administrative efficiency and infrastructure development.

The Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation, and Rural Development (MLGDRD) issued a press release on November 7, 2024, confirming the executive approval granted under Section 3(1) of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936).

This change responds to a request by the Ministry, aligning with the provisions of Act 936 to enhance governance structures at the local level.

According to the Ministry, the following assemblies have been upgraded from municipalities to metropolises:

1. Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Assembly becomes the Kpone-Katamanso Metropolitan Assembly.

2. Techiman Municipal Assembly is now the Techiman Metropolitan Assembly.

The Gomoa East District Assembly has been elevated to metropolitan status, now recognized as the Gomoa East Metropolitan Assembly.

In a further expansion of municipal statuses, 12 district assemblies have been upgraded to municipalities:

1. Bole District Assembly is now the Bole Municipal Assembly.

2. Afigya Kwabre South District Assembly becomes the Afigya Kwabre South Municipal Assembly.

3. Atwima Kwanwoma District Assembly transitions to the Atwima Kwanwoma Municipal Assembly.

4. Atwima Nwabiagya North District Assembly is upgraded to the Atwima Nwabiagya North Municipal Assembly.

5. Obuasi East District Assembly is now the Obuasi East Municipal Assembly.

6. Sekyere South District Assembly becomes the Sekyere South Municipal Assembly.

7. Ningo-Prampram District Assembly is upgraded to the Ningo-Prampram Municipal Assembly.

8. Anloga District Assembly transitions to the Anloga Municipal Assembly.

9. South Tongu District Assembly is now the South Tongu Municipal Assembly.

10. Shama District Assembly becomes the Shama Municipal Assembly.

11. Techiman North District Assembly is upgraded to the Techiman North Municipal Assembly.

12. Pru East District Assembly is now the Pru East Municipal Assembly.

The Ministry noted that these upgrades are pending the completion of all necessary legal and administrative processes.

Further decisions regarding the elevation of Ho Municipality to metropolitan status and Offinso North and Birim North districts to municipalities are still under consideration.

Additionally, petitions for the creation of new districts are being reviewed.

The release, signed by the Minister of Local Government, Decentralisation, and Rural Development, Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah, emphasized that the upgrades reflect the government’s commitment to effective decentralization.
