Services at various public sector institutions have ground to a halt due to an ongoing indefinite strike by the Public Services Workers Union.

The union is protesting the delayed payment of two essential allowances: the Government Support Services Allowance and the Public Services Administration & Equity Allowance.

During a visit by Citi News to several government agencies, including the National Identification Authority (NIA) and the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), it was evident that individuals seeking services were being turned away.

Sammy Kojo, a citizen impacted by the strike, voiced his frustration after attempting to obtain his Ghana Card at the NIA. He lamented the inconvenience caused by the disruption, highlighting the challenges faced by the public during this period.

“I misplaced my phone this morning, and I went to the MTN office to replace my SIM card. But I was told that unless I get my Ghana Card. So, I came here only to realise that they were on strike.

“Now, without the Ghana card, I cannot get the old sim back and I had money in my mobile wallet. With these public institutions, when they go on strike, they cause a lot of disturbances to their customers and it is disturbing.

Another applicant, Ben Aziz, who had travelled from Kasoa to apply for a fresh Ghana Card, shared a similar experience.

“He came here to apply for a fresh Ghana card and they said they are on strike. I am coming from Kasoa to this place.

“Now, I don’t know what to do. But I took the security guy’s number so that when they resume, he will call me. Because there is nothing I can do at the moment,” he stated.
