Holistic health education is key to unlocking total well-being—CDA Consult

The Communication for Development and Advocacy Consult Limited (CDA Consult) has advocated for holistic health education from the domestic level through the corporate field to ensure a healthy society.

Mr. Francis Ameyibor, CDA Consult Executive Director, who is a health communication advocate, stressed on Monday that in today's fast-paced world, where stress and anxiety have become commonplace, the importance of holistic health education cannot be overstated.

“Gone are the days when health was solely associated with the physical body. Today, we understand that true well-being encompasses the mind, body, and spirit,” Mr. Ameyibor stated in an interview as CDA Consult Ltd. and Lifeline Haven Company Limited join forces with the National Insurance Commission (NIC) and the Africa Medical Information Centre (AMIC) to upscale holistic health advocacy.

Mr. Ameyibor explained that traditional health education has primarily focused on the physical aspects of health, neglecting the equally important mental and spiritual dimensions.

“This limited approach in the past has led to a fragmented understanding of health, resulting in a lack of emphasis on prevention and holistic wellness,” stressing that in today’s world, the need for holistic health education is crucial.

Mr. Ameyibor explained that holistic health education addresses the whole person—physical, mental, and spiritual—as it empowers individuals to take charge of their well-being, making informed choices that promote health and prevent disease.

CDA Consult, Lifeline Haven, AMIC, and NIC are joining forces to embark on a holistic health education, he said.

Ms. Jennifer Nelson, a Preventive and Occupational Health Management Consultant, explained that holistic health education will help reduce chronic diseases, improve mental health and resilience, enhance spiritual connection and purpose, and foster healthy relationships and communities.

Ms. Nelson, who is also the CEO of preventive health NGO Lifeline Haven Company Limited, emphasised that holistic health education also increases self-awareness and self-care, improves health outcomes and quality of life, and enhances productivity and creativity.

She said, “It is time to revolutionize health education and prioritize holistic well-being. We must advocate for comprehensive health education in schools and communities and support research and development in holistic health fields.

“We must encourage healthcare providers to adopt integrative approaches. Embrace holistic practices in our personal lives.”

Ms. Nelson said holistic health education is the foundation upon which total well-being is built.

“By embracing this progressive approach, we can transform our lives, communities, and society as a whole. Let us join forces to prioritize holistic health education and create a future where every individual can thrive in body, mind, and spirit,” she said.

Mr. Jignesh Viradia, Chief Executive Officer of AMIC, working through the AMIC Medicare Diagnostic Centre, said the centre believes that access to accurate, reliable, and up-to-date medical information is essential for improving healthcare outcomes in Africa.

“Our mission is to provide healthcare professionals, policymakers, researchers, and the public with the knowledge and resources they need to make informed decisions and take effective action to improve health and wellbeing across the continent.

“AMIC is committed to a collaborative and evidence-based approach to healthcare improvement. We work with a wide range of partners, including healthcare providers, government agencies, NGOs, and academic institutions, to promote knowledge exchange, research, and innovation in healthcare delivery and policy,” Mr. Viradia stated.

Mr. Viradia said the call for holistic health education is crucial and called on stakeholders to support the project.
