The confusion within the Ghana Education Service (GES) hierarchy is becoming increasingly evident and problematic. Growing up, we were taught that power and order flow from the top of any hierarchy. However, in the GES, it seems this principle only applies to the lower ranks. A clear example is the recent Trained Teacher recruitment process.
A directive is issued from GES Headquarters outlining the recruitment procedure at the regional and district/municipal/metropolitan levels. Yet, when candidates arrive at the regional office with their appointment letters, they are told, “Headquarters is doing their own thing, and we’re doing ours.” This disconnect is troubling, but the issue doesn’t stop there.
For about 90 percent of the qualified applicants, their appointment letters set the assumption of duty date as August 1, 2024. However, the lower hierarchy overturned this, stating that if you started on August 1, it's been annulled. Instead, recruits are being told to go for another assumption of duty letter with a new start date of September 10. Meanwhile, Headquarters remains silent.
This raises critical questions: Where is this confusion coming from? Who is failing to do their job properly, and who is being stubborn? The lack of communication and coordination between the different levels of GES is causing unnecessary frustration and delays, affecting the very teachers the system should be supporting. It's time for leadership to take responsibility and bring order to this chaos.
