Former President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his dedication to addressing security challenges and related issues should he be elected in the December 7 elections.
During a media engagement in Bolgatanga, wrapping up his four-day national campaign tour in the region, Mr Mahama emphasised the urgency of reinforcing Ghana's security, especially in light of recent insurgent and jihadist activities in neighboring Burkina Faso.
Mahama expressed concerns over the current government's handling of diplomatic relations with Burkina Faso, which he believes has strained bilateral trust.
He criticized President Akufo-Addo for comments made during a visit to the United States, which Mr Mahama claims have created tensions between the two countries.
Although President Akufo-Addo later visited Burkina Faso to apologise, Mr Mahama asserted that the damage had been done.
"We must regain our trust with our neighbors from Burkina Faso to properly deal with insurgency and other security threats. Unfortunately, this government has created some tensions between us and Burkina Faso because our President went to America and opened his mouth and gossiped about them. Though he went there [Burkina Faso] to apologize, it is still not enough. So when we come back to power, we will work seriously with them and strengthen our border security system," Mahama stated.
He further highlighted the importance of resolving internal conflicts such as the ongoing disturbances in Bawku.
Mr Mahama further pointed out that areas with weakened security often serve as entry points for terrorists, underlining the need for a stable and secure environment, especially in Bawku.
