The National Communications Authority (NCA) has issued a press release to address complaints about the high cost of internet data in the country.
Ghanaians in the past week have complained on social media over the cost of internet data and internet connection.
Most Ghanaians who shared their sentiments on social media lashed out at the NCA, accusing it of forcing MTN to increase the cost of its data bundle.
In its release, the NCA said contrary to the complaints, data prices in Ghana are the third cheapest in Africa and the second cheapest in West Africa.
“Furthermore, data from a report published by cable.co.uk, and reviewed by the Authority as part of a regular Billing Monitoring exercise, ranked Ghana 3rd in Africa as the country with the cheapest cost pricing for mobile internet data and 2nd in the West African Region,” parts of the NCA press release said.
The NCA in its press release assured consumers that it will continue to work closely with all relevant stakeholders to ensure reliable internet access.
Meanwhile, the Authority said the Significant Market Player (SMP) classification of MTN is not intended to punish or stifle the network’s operations but rather to ensure a level playing field in the market and protect consumer choice.
“By implementing measures such as asymmetric interconnection rates, tariff parity, and technology neutrality, the NCA aims to promote competition, encourage innovation, and protect consumers' interests. These measures enable other operators to compete effectively, offer sustainable pricing, and invest in improving service quality,” NCA said.
