Bawumia campaign suffering credibility crisis - Political Analyst

Dr. Jonathan Asante Otchere, a political science lecturer at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), has expressed skepticism about Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s ability to lead the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) to break the eight-year political cycle in the upcoming December 7, 2024, elections.

According to Dr. Otchere, Dr. Bawumia's campaign is facing a significant credibility crisis, as evidenced by Nana Akomea's claims that Dr. Bawumia becomes visibly uncomfortable when confronted with his previous recordings on the state of the economy.

Dr. Otchere argued that Dr. Bawumia had built a reputation for himself as a "know-it-all," often promoting falsehoods over the truth.

This perceived dishonesty, he explained, is eroding public trust in Dr. Bawumia’s campaign efforts across the country.

Dr. Otchere pointed out that the government's failure to fulfil its promises under the New Patriotic Party administration is also hampering Dr. Bawumia’s campaign.

He criticized Dr. Bawumia for attempting to distance himself from the government's shortcomings while simultaneously claiming he would handle things differently if given full control as the driver, which Dr. Otchere sees as an admission of failure.

These comments were made in response to remarks by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who urged Dr. Bawumia to be truthful with Ghanaians during his visit to the Asante King at the Manhyia Palace in the Ashanti Region.

Reflecting on the state of the country, Dr. Otchere noted the high price of basic goods like pepper, despite the government's claims of success with its Planting for Food and Jobs initiative.

He criticized the current administration, describing the hardships faced by Ghanaians as the worst he has seen under the Fourth Republic.

Despite these challenges, he observed, the Vice President continues to project an image of infallibility.
