Professor (Dr. Dr. Dr.) Joseph Kwasi Agyemang, a distinguished Ghanaian scholar and Senior Lecturer in the Department of Accounting and Finance at the University of Eswatini, has emerged as a trailblazer, being the first person globally to attain three distinct PhDs in accounting.

Initially aspiring to pursue at least one of his PhDs in Ghana, Professor Agyemang revealed that limited opportunities prompted him to look beyond his home country. The University of Ghana was the sole institution offering a PhD in Accounting, but admission challenges arose due to limited resources for supervising his desired research interests.

Realizing the transformative potential of immersing himself in different cultures and academic environments, Professor Agyemang opted to pursue all three of his PhDs abroad. The use of modern technologies, coupled with the flexibility of conducting independent research while remaining employed, further influenced his decision.

Disclosing the factors that guided his choice of foreign universities, Professor Agyemang highlighted the availability of supervisors with expertise in diverse research areas, scholarships, and the global excellence of institutions like the University of South Africa (UNISA). The allure of a robust accounting programme and the opportunity to engage in a new cultural milieu were additional motivating factors.

According to Professor Agyemang, his international academic experiences have significantly contributed to his professional development.
