Over the years, Ghana has produced several hard-working and renowned investigative journalists and fact-checkers, including Francisca Enchill, Anas Aremeyaw Anas, Manasseh Azure Awuni and others.
While well-known journalists are contributing their part to combat corruption, disinformation and the spread of misinformation in the country, there are also vibrant young journalists who have been doing tremendously well given their age and experience.
In this article, ModernGhana News puts its radar on Philip Teye Agbove, a multiple award-winning fellow of the journalistic community.
Early Life and Education:
A distinguished Ghanaian investigative journalist and fact-checker, Philip Teye Agbove was born into a large farming family in Salom-Madagber, a small village in Ghana's Greater Accra Region.
From a young age, he witnessed the struggles faced by his rural community which went underreported.
It persists till the only television in his village was stolen by armed robbers.
This inspired Agbove to pursue a career in journalism so that he could amplify voices on the margins.
He started his education from Toflokpo Presby Primary and Junior High Schools after which he pursued second-cycle education at Osudoku Senior High Technical School.
Eager to hone his skills, Agbove then graduated with honors from Ghana Media School with diploma in Journalis.
At the graduation ceremony, he was honoured as Most Promising Student in Print Journalism, Best Student in Print Journalism, and Best Student in Media Marketing
He is currently furthering his studies at African University College of Communications (AUCC), where he is expected to graduate with a bachelor's degree in Development Communication at the end of his studies.
Starting His Journalism Journey:
Agbove began his career at community radio station Radio Ada, covering impactful stories from his hometown.
His passion for accountability drew him to positions at the Ghana News Agency and UK-based SheHub.tv where he broke impactful investigative reports.
He also worked for Farm Radio International Ghana, where he focused on solution-based journalism.
His collaboration with international media outlets such as the BBC and CBC underscores his commitment to groundbreaking news coverage.
Through fearless coverage of issues from land rights to corruption, Agbove's reporting shaped policies and debates.
Rising Profile and Recognition:
The young journalist's commitment to speaking truth to power through solutions-focused storytelling has led to numerous awards.
Notable among those accolades include the Most Promising Young Investigative Journalist (2022) by the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) and the Outstanding Justice Advocate Award for anti-human trafficking efforts by the International Justice Mission (IJM).
A nominee for the 2023 ICFJ Knight International Journalism Awards and Amnesty Media Awards, Philip is also Ghana’s National Outstanding Student Journalist of the Year (2022) and Ghana’s Best Student Radio Presenter 2021.
Despite threats in his line of work, Agbove continues fighting censorship and championing press freedom.
Through his rising profile, he is increasingly seen as a respected newfound gem amplifying narratives from grassroots communities.
