2024 General Election: Mudslinging, machoism, and destruction of bill boards won’t help anyone – Prof. Gyampo

Senior political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Legon, Prof. Ransford Gyampo has kicked against the destruction of campaign billboards ahead of the 2024 General Election.

In a post on social media, he argued that such acts pose a security threat and should not be encouraged.

Prof. Ransford Gyampo in his post said mudslinging, machoism, and destruction of billboards won’t help anyone ahead of the 2024 General Election.

He was reacting to a viral video in which a billboard throwing back to what former President John Dramani Mahama had said in the past was being destroyed.

“This is a potential security threat. It is not the way to go. No matter how annoying a write-up on a bill board may be, we must not take the law into our own hands. A campaign bill board that captures writings that can be used to score political points, can be countered easily by mountain an equally huge bill board that writes or captions superior information and message that sets records straight.

"In the 2024 elections, mudslinging, machoism, and destruction of bill boards won’t help anyone,” Prof. Ransford Gyampo said.

He proposes that National Peace Council, National Commission for Civic Education, Electoral Commission, Civil Society Leaders should rise and speak against such acts.

He argues that if nothing is done there would be retaliations and counterattacks in a manner that may result in bloody violence and mar the peace of the country.

“We must speak against this creeping useless billboard campaign. For, looming dangers have no warning red flags,” Prof. Ransford Gyampo cautioned.
