The American Human Rights Council (AHRC-USA) joins the United Nations and the global community in celebrating Nelson Mandela International Day that falls annually on July 18. This a day to honor of former South African President, anti-apartheid activist, freedom fighter, legend, and world leader, Nelson Mandela.
In 2009, the United Nations General Assembly unanimously voted to set aside July 18 as Nelson Mandela International Day to honor the lifelong work and activism of Nelson Mandela in his fight for the advancement and protection of civil and human rights for the people of South Africa and for people around the world.
Mandela’s Day falls amidst a world torn by injustice, war, conflict, hunger, poverty, and racism. This day serves as a constant reminder that the struggle towards a world of peace, equality and justice is still far from the reality Nelson Mandela devoted most of his life to trying to create. Throughout his 67 years of service, the world leader inspired and impacted people across the globe.
"As we look at the worsening conflict in Palestine, we remember the timeless words of Nelson Mandela," said Imad Hamad, AHRC Executive Director. 'Mandela said "our freedom is incomplete without the freedom of the Palestinians,' added Hamad. "Mandela continues to inspire the Palestinians and all other freedom fighters around the world," concluded Hamad.
